Lawmakers roll out open-bidding bill for a Bridgeport casino

Lawmakers led by the Bridgeport delegation introduced a bill Thursday to form a Connecticut Gaming Commission and create competitive bidding for a resort-casino license, formally launching this year’s fight in one of the state’s most divisive issues.

Though Bridgeport is not explicitly mentioned in the bill, it will be the battleground as MGM Resorts International, a backer of the bill, has fought for years for the right to build a $675 million casino on the harbor in the state’s largest city.

Casino in East Windsor Set Back Again

A federal judge’s ruling over the weekend adds to the legal tangle over opening Connecticut’s first casino off a tribal reservation in East Windsor — and the court battle over expanded gambling could be just warming up.

“It’s only a matter of time until the next legal hammer drops,” Rep. Joe Verrengia, D-West Hartford and co-chairman of legislature’s public safety and security committee, said Monday. “This issue could put us on hold indefinitely. We can’t have the gaming industry in Connecticut on hold while the landscape all around us is changing.”
